Up the Telegraph Track

Cape York’s Old Telegraph Track is one of those legendary, must-do 4WD tracks and was top of our bucket list for our Australian lap. Between 1885 and 1962 this was the route of the telegraph line and the only means of communication for those living on the remote cape peninsula. It has basically never been maintained since the line was dismantled and as such is an awesome, challenging 4WD adventure through some of Australia’s most spectacular scenery.

This story is best told through pictures:

The first challenge, Palm Creek, is right at the start of the track. There was very little water in the creek but the steep ascents and descents were a good challenge.

Palm Creek in reverse. We had so much fun going up the Tele track that we decided to do the second half in reverse. Some welly was required to get us back up Palm Creek

Gunshot creek is legendary along this track. Crazy people actually take this route down where if you're lucky you'll land on your bull bar and drive out. If you're unlucky you'll end up in all sorts of drama.

Nolan's Brook was giving me nightmares before we even started this trip. This year 50 cars were drowned on this creek crossing. It is deep. But with low tyre pressures and steady driving it was rather easy in the end.

Happy camping at Canal Creek with our Tele Track buddies. One of the best things about this track is the people you meet and help out along the way.

The rustic old log bridge near the end of the track. I've seen video footage of a caravan being towed through here with inches to spare on either side of the bridge.
